Children's Art Class with Imitation Studio
September: Captivated by COLOR
Every Thursday of the Month
9:00am - 11:00am
Ages: 3-11 Elementary
Makers Space with Imitation Studio is lead by artist Portia Schneider. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in Photography and a minor in Art History. Portia has photographed in Australia, Canada, Egypt, France, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, South Africa, Spain, and various locations in the United States of America. She has been formally taught print-making, sculpture and photography. Her art can be viewed at www.portiaschneider.com
Imitation Studio will spend the month of September focused on COLOR. The multitude of ways it is used, how it is mixed, understanding complementary colors, and the feelings colors elicit. Each class will have a sensory bin of rainbow rice with colorful items focused on the theme to play with during class. This session is an elementary class and is open to ages 3-11. Portia will provide interactive activities for the students abilities present. For example, for the beginner abilities will be sorting colors with crayons, following lines with the appropriate color to connect identical items, cutting out paper items and matching and learning what color items are, for example a cactus is green. The more intermediate will be mixing their own paint colors and coloring by number with some reading and the advanced will be mixing colors and creating a color wheel in addition to coloring pages with sequential numbering shapes and reading puzzles to get the clue to determine the color to use. One class will provide color sorted legos to create a finished product in teams. This item will be on display at Mendo LEAP for one month for other to enjoy. Each class for the month of September with vary and provided different activities for new comers and something different for repeat attendees. Portia will spotlight at least one new artist a session to introduce participants to different forms of art and cultural expression. Each class will end with 15 minutes open creativity time. The class sizes are limited to ten students to provided personal attention to each attendant.
Each monthly art course will be engaging the student to problem solve, engage with others, increase fine motor skills, gain courage to try something new and take risks, open their imagination, help them follow instructions, lengthen their patience, create independent critical-thinking, become effective communicators, and be self-directed and motivated.
